A question that gets asked often is 'how much garden space do I need to have if I want to feed 1 person for a year'.

According to John Jeavons, to grow a balanced vegan diet you will need:
conventional mechanized techniques: 7000 sq-ft
conventional mechanized techniques (using zero fossil fuels): 28000 sq-ft
biointensive techniques: 1000 sq-ft (food only)  (4000 sq-ft more likely)

Steve Solomon says 2000 sq-ft of garden space feeds 2 adults about 1/2 of their daily calories.

This topic came up on the NTVG facebook group.  Here is some of the info from there:

Quote
Linda: My husband always says that it takes an acre a person. I couldnt imagine having to garden something that big and all the canning i'd have to do. I think there is logical ways around having to plant so much. In order to feed home grown produce year round a person will be spending a lot of time canning and freezing stuff since so many plants produce all at once.

Karrisa: Here's an interesting article I pinned on Pinterest before. It's a blog entry about how much one family produced and sold from 1/8 of an acre. http://baybranchfarm.com/2010/11/15/so-just-how-much-food-can-you-grow-on-18th-acre/
They use the SPIN-farming method for maximizing succession planting to produce as much as possible in a year. http://www.spinfarming.com/
