This program is a class<br \/>\ndesigned to help every-day and beginner gardeners design, plant, and maintain their own organic<br \/>\nbackyard gardens while also giving back to their community.<br \/>\nThe hands-on class held August 13th from 8:30am \u2013 5:30pm at the Fortress Youth Development<br \/>\nCenter in Fort Worth (712 Stella Street) will be the beginning of a community garden for inner-city<br \/>\nchildren and their families. Class participants will learn how to create their own productive organic<br \/>\nvegetable garden in the right place, with the right soil, at the right time, and with the right plants. The<br \/>\nclass will be led by the knowledgeable and experienced Austin permaculture instructor Dick Pierce<br \/>\nwith assistance from local backyard gardeners. Once the class is completed, a donation of 10<br \/>\nadditional hours with the Citizen Gardener program certifies participants as Citizen Gardeners. This<br \/>\nenriching experience can help fuel future individuals and organic community gardens in<br \/>\nneighborhoods throughout the Metroplex.<br \/>\nThe Fortress Youth Development Center, a non-profit organization created in 2005 provides social<br \/>\nand academic resources to inner-city youth that help them overcome the trap of generational poverty<br \/>\nso that they may prosper into productive adults. Gardening is a unique opportunity to teach children<br \/>\nabout responsibility, patience, appreciation, and consistency. While we all know that growing our own<br \/>\norganic food is more nutritious, cheaper, better for the environment, and provides healthy exercise,<br \/>\nthe investment we make to our own community and our children is invaluable.<br \/>\nThe deadline to sign up for this class is Tuesday, August 9, 2011. The cost is $30\/person and is<br \/>\nlimited to 30 participants.
