Would have posted this under a more suitable category, but I'm not allowed to post under Plant Information yet. Am wondering what kind of potatoes are best for a fall garden in D/FW area. Also, I don't know where to get seed potatoes. Any helpful info?
-
The Wells bros farm store in Plano (near me) usually carry gold and red potatoes.
-
Now I see you are in Johnson County, so I'm sure you don't want to drive all the way through DFW to get seed potatoes. Also, now that I think about I only remember seeing seed potatoes in the spring.
I ran across a someplace (in Texas I thought) that specialized in many varieties of potatoes, but I can't find it now. (sorry)
I don't know about any of the stores near you, so if you have visited any of the local stores, please create a new post for each store in the "where" board.

I bought German Butterball and Sangre Red seed potatoes (Organic brand) at Calloway's Nursery in the early spring.
Harvested now, Sangre Red did well but the German Butterball was a BUST! Beautiful huge plants but not a potato one! I should have just eaten the 5 seed potatoes. Anyone have any idea what happened?

Calloway's has no seed potatoes. Already checked there. I just ordered some online from a site called Potato Garden. They only had one variety left, so that's what I ordered. Hope it will do well. It will be my first time planting potatoes.

Brian, so far everything I've bought has been in Ft. Worth at Calloway's and the Plant Shed, except for this online purchase this morning. I believe the Feed Mill in Burleson does carry seed potatoes in the spring, but that's just what I've been told. I will probably try there next spring. Can't post on the Where board.

I am a newbie with potato growing but everything I read says plant them in early Spring. Do potatoes work in a Fall garden in Texas? Mounding worked well for me with red potatoes.
-
I've seen planting fall potatoes on several local planting calendars. I've never tried it before either. July 25 to August 10!
-
My seed potatoes arrived in the mail today! Yay! ;D
-
Where did you get them from? We need to add that to the seed supply list so everyone knows where to get their seed potatoes from!

I ordered my seed potatoes from an online source: www.potatogarden.com. They only had one variety available at the time I ordered, but it looked like they normally (for spring) have several different varieties. The Burpee Seed Co. had many varieties, but their prices were more than 3 times higher. I wasn't willing to pay that much. So I couldn't get small red potatoes like I wanted, but I will work with these and try for the red ones for my spring garden.

very good!
I added that company to the list on the thread: http://northtexasvegetablegardeners.com/forum/index.php?topic=20.0
