Title: large cantaloupe
Post by: Phil from Krum on July 31, 2011, 02:32:37 PM
Here's a pic of a 6 pound 12 ounce Sugar Queen cantaloupe picked up 2 days ago. I grow them on trellises and wait for them to drop rather than "picking" them.

I like growing cantaloupe on trellises too.   Here is what happens when they grow too close to the ground!

Mine are on the ground.  Just put an extra bed of hay under them when I see them growing.  Haven't weighed any of them.  Mine haven't been quite as sweet as I was hoping for.  Are yours, Phil?

The Sugar Queen aren't, probable bred for size rather than flavor. The Sugar Baby are very sweet but about half the size or a bit less. We are having to water every other day to keep the plants alive and that may be effecting the taste too.

That's what I've been doing...every other day watering for the cantaloupe.  Do you happen to know if this plant that I put in this past spring will continue to produce into the fall?  I just have two fruit left on the vine, but there are still flowers and new growth is still developing.

If it's still setting flowers and small fruit it's still good. In the past mine have continued to produce until a hard frost. This heat is hard on the bees too. You might try setting a shallow plate filled with stones and water in your garden. The stones give the bees a place to land to drink so they should stick up above the water.
