Title: Hi This is Linda in Fort Worth
Post by: womenwithwheels on February 21, 2012, 08:47:24 PM
Hi,

My name is Linda Morales and I live in north Fort Worth in a little town just above 820N, Lake Worth.  - I have gardened all of my life, but this year I'm spending my energy on veggies in raised beds.  I started last Fall with greens and a small variety of veggies.  Now that we're in Spring, I have started to see some results- I had three broccoli heads ready to pick this week, since I wanted to catch them before they bolted.  It looks like there are more to come.

Since I grew up in Pennsylvania, having two growing seasons in Texas is new to me.  I have planted cool weather plants: onions, broccoli, potatoes, lettuce, spinach, radishes, peas, and wax beans.  In a little while, I'll put in tomatoes, peppers, and squashes.  Since much of my yard receives harsh western sun, I've learned to use the shade from the backyard trees as a means to extend the life span of my plants.

I also love to draw birds into my yard, but find that wild bird seed is extremely pricey, so I will plant milo, millet, and sunflowers in one section of the yard and I hope to harvest as much as I can before the birds eat them!  Hopefully, I can put some seed away to feed them throughout the winter!

I love the site and also communicating with everyone on the NTCG page on Facebook!  Thanks for the great information from everyone!

Welcome to the forum Linda!  I've never used shade before, but this year I will.  Shade and mulch are the secrets of the local growers.  (I learned this at the TOFGA conference last weekend)
