Tina's Garden (West Fort Worth)
« on: July 18, 2011, 10:32:42 AM »
I'm a little embarrassed by my garden based on some of the photos I've seen here, but here goes...

This is looking on the south side of the house into the backyard:

Here's a closer view of the beds:

The large bed has beefmaster hybrid tomatoes (yet to produce a tomato but plenty of buds - frustrating), cabbage (stupid cabbage worms) and black seeded simpson lettuce (which we apparently don't even like so won't be growing again); middle bed - green beans and back bed had corn that never thrived and it now houses ruby kohlrabi (that we don't even know what to do with yet!).

Closer look at green beans:

Closer look at kohlrabi (some of these didn't make it):

Flowers in the gray planter (supposed to be to attract the bees for pollination) and herbs in the white pot (supposed to be a natural pest detterent - they don't like the natural fragrances):

Down the south slope of the backyard - contains cucumbers, pumpkins, cantaloupe and watermelons and will later hold fall squashes that are in the starter planter at the moment (acorn, butternut):

Elevated planter box - flowers on one end and herbs on the other - box contains carrots and potatoes, and my husband's topsy turvy tomato plant - produced one tomato that turned bad quickly:

Starter planter - I think has eggplant, acorn squash, butternut squash and probably a few cantaloupes, pumpkins and watermelons that hadn't yet sprouted when I transplanted the first round:

My daughter's zinnias that refuse to bloom:

Overview of backyard - the trellis' leaning against the house, the one closest to the camera is a raspberry bush and the further one was a grape bush that I think died, so we threw in some strawberries and blackberries on either side of where the grape bush was to see if they would take:

Last night, we laid soaker hoses in the beds - our water bill was ridiculous last month!  Since the taking of the photos, I also moved the gray planter box into the large bed, mostly to ease with watering.

I was inspired to start the garden after paying $4 for a butternut squash 2 years ago.  So much for starting small, huh?   ;D

Tina, thanks for posting all the pictures!  I love seeing what other people are doing.  You are experimenting with all kinds of different things, and I know you will find the secrets of making lots of food soon.  (and please share it with us when you do)

I'm not going to want to see my water bill this month either by the way.
