I'm a bit of a newbie gardener but finding that it may be my true passion! Here's my gardening story in a nutshell...
I've been living in The Colony for over 10 years, and my modest backyard has gone through a number of transformations, but I never seemed to have control. The weeds always won and a cohesive and sustainable design never transpired. Though I had an idea of what I wanted, the task of making it a reality always seemed way too daunting.
Last year, my husband and I finally bit the bullet and hired a landscaping contractor to come basically create a blank slate for us and do some of the heavy labor that was beyond our physical means. My garden went from an utter embarrassment to a beautiful canvas with lots of potential. Unfortunately, it all happened a bit too late in the season last year, and most of our plantings were too ambitious considering the crazy hot summer that followed. Our vegetable garden was sadly not too productive, except for the okra. Ugh, okra!
This year promises to be much more fun and productive. I've been researching and planning for the past few weeks and hope to have a handle on things this time round. I figured surrounding myself with a community of people on the same mission more or less would be a good idea, so here I am!
My interests include sustainable living, organic gardening, wildlife habitats, permaculture, etc. I just attended the Urban Sustainable Ecosystems workshop in Coppell this past weekend, and that was a very inspiring experience. I'm a self-employed web designer by trade, most interested in the creative, aesthetic, and usability aspects. For a while there I was feeling rather burned out and wasn't sure I wanted to continue with my chosen field of work. Gardening has truly been a wonderfully grounding experience for me and provided some needed balance to all the time I spent behind a computer screen. Now I just hope to one day blend these two vocations.
