Hello
« on: April 29, 2012, 05:06:14 AM »
Hi.  My name is Wendy and I am a plantaholic.  I live to play in the soil and my fingernails are always broken and if I am not at work you will find me out in the the yard.  This was the first year I did a winter garden and I used some simple grow tunnels and was pleased with the results. I planted the second week of January.  I joke around and say that I don't eat rabbit food (veggies) but they are fun to grow and pretty to look at.  I use a weird blend of techniques in my garden and I'm always open to doing things a different way.  I am into the no till style right now as my garden is on top of a Wise County white clay hill so tilling would be an exercise in futility. However I do have some nice woods and under the trees there is an endless supply of oak leaf mold and nice sandy soil that has decades of organic matter in it so I rake up this treasure and dump it in each of my beds every few weeks and the plants seem happy.   I  employ some square foot methods in my garden but I'm not as precise as some are.  I like playful plants too and we grow popcorn every year just because its fun.  We  pop it over a campfire and that's just kind of cool.  Here's a picture of my garden around March 15th and I had removed the plastic tunnels for some fresh air.  You can see my ultra fancy hoops but they worked great!

And here is a shot with the plastic on.

This is the same garden last summer taken at the end of August.  It was a little raggedy but it survived summer and went on to throw a bumper crop of tomatoes and peppers.  It was unreal!

So I'm looking forward to hanging out a bit.  I'm kind of a lonely gardener because most folks I know don't garden and they look at me kind of funny when I start talking about my garden.  I have flower beds too of course. I have always had perennials but last year was my first year here and I had a lot of space to fill so I tried some annuals too.  They were kind of fun so this year I invited some back.  This all means that I'm broke all the time because all my spare cash goes to the nurseries all over North Texas,  The kids will say "We're hungry!" and I reply "It's planted!  Be patient!  It will be ready in a few weeks if the weather holds!" ;D

Welcome to the community Wen!  Love seeing your garden pictures too, but jealous of all your space and access to leaf litter.  How do your tomato plants look right now?  Lots of people are battling more pests this spring.

They are looking alright.  I work a LOT of hours so I was a bit tardy at getting them in the ground.  I started from seed this year and that timing was right on the money but getting them in the ground got delayed but they are catching up. " There is time enough" as an old teacher of mine used to say because I tend to be a bit impatient....But my carrots are wonderful and still getting a bit of lettuce...I've not the heart to pull all the broccoli because its blooming and the butterflies are all around it.  I can't bear to take it away from them but I'm needing the space to rotate other stuff in their place.  And bugs?  Yes, they have been bothersome.  Caterpillar were tough on some things but I figure they grow into butterflies or moths so I am tolerant of them but some of the other creepy crawlies do not know that benevolent side of me.
