Here is a list of places to buy seeds from, and you can request free seed catalogs from most of them. The catalogs can be a great source of information themselves.
My personal favorite is Park Seed. They are located in the south, so they know what it takes to grow vegetables in the heat. They also do their own testing and producing of seeds and plants.
http://www.parkseed.comThe list below is compiled from information found
here. (mostly copy/paste, not my words)
---
http://rareseeds.com/ - Baker Creek Seed Company - located in Mansfield Missouri.- Jere Gettle has a passion for all things heirloom. He's a leader in the fight for non-GMO food. He does good things & if you're ever near Mansfield when one of their festivals is occurring I encourage you to check it out. It's great Ozarks fun & you just might learn a thing or two about heirloom seeds. Lots of resources on the site as well, give it a look.
http://www.seedsavers.org/ - Seed Saver's Exchange is one of the biggest & oldest around doing the heirloom seed thing. They're an invaluable resource for anything heirloom seed related.
www.jungseed.com, they're pretty good

I'm a big fan of Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company
http://rareseeds.com/ as well. Great catalog. I'm looking forward to trying a Black Brandywine Tomato
http://www.territorialseed.com/ http://www.victoryseeds.com/ http://www.gardennursery.com/ Some of these are priced better than others, but the seeds are either organic or open pollinated, not hybrids so you can save the seed.
This place is my favorite,
http://www.groworganic.com/I like: Heirloom Acres Seeds
http://heirloomacresseeds.com/ The tomatoes that I started from seed here are really incredible.
Fedco Seeds ...
http://www.fedcoseeds.com/They have four separate divisions -- vegetable seeds, potatoes, trees/shrubs, and bulbs. They have a strong inclination towards open-pollinated and heirloom varieties, fantastic selection, old-time down-homey catalog info, all that good stuff ... and hands-down, the best prices I've seen, overall.
They are my second favorite seed source, after Seed Savers Exchange.
One place I use for berries, etc is Tradewinds Fruit. Many, many new to me varieties of fruits & veggies to try. http://www.tradewindsfruit.com/order_fruit_a_l.htm
I didn't see my favorite place listed. I've bought from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. Located in the mid-Atlantic area. I didn't see my favorite place listed. I've bought from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. Located in the mid-Atlantic area.
http://www.southernexposure.com/index.htmlA great resource for finding obscure seed companies and for getting ratings of companies you may not have dealt with is gardenwatchdog.com. If you are thinking of ordering from a new company, check here to see what others are saying about them first. http://gardenwatchdog.com/
I did not see this listed, a site that may be of interest is
www.artisticgardens.com. I don't know too much about them but
they have 35 cent seed packet samplers and they have a lot of "non-standard" fare. I heard about them from a radio gardening show and figured I would give them a shot. It did take a while to receive the order but it did arrive.
I just started the seed a couple of days ago so nothing has sprouted as of yet so I have nothing to report.
http://www.westcoastseeds.com/ (BC) I hear a lot of good things about them. They have a lot of heirloom varieties.
http://www.botanicalinterests.com/store/index_index.phpJust found this through High Country Gardens. They specialize in xeriscape plants, but the company has a link for your zone map and the downloadable pdf for their seeds is really cool!http://www.botanicalinterests.com/store/index_index.php Just found this through High Country Gardens. Stark Brothers came highly recommended to me for fruit trees and plants. I'm planning to try them out shortly for my dwarf peach trees; I'll let y'all know. http://www.starkbros.com/
I just ordered seeds from this resource. I had some questions and called costumer service, I am very happy to report that I talked directly to a horticulturalist and he was very helpful http://www.parkseed.com/gardening/GP/homepage/page1
I didn't see one of my favorite seed companies mentioned:
Heirloom Seeds
http://www.heirloomseeds.com/I have ordered from them many times and had good luck. They carry a lot of varieties and have some nice downloadable planting schedules & germination tables.
One I didn't see in the thread yet ... I've gotten some grains from them. Also some good reading.
http://www.seedforsecurity.com/I'd also like to put in a good word for
http://www.victoryseeds.com/ as I've had great luck with them the past couple years.
I recently stumbled on these guys while looking for grain amaranth. Amazing selection of Native American corn and beans. These seeds are probably especially suited for the South and Southwest. I just ordered, so will follow up on service.
