Welcome! I'm glad u haven't given up. One book I really learned a lot from has the prodigious title "How to Grow More Vegetables than You Thought Possible on Less Land than You Can Imagine." It's by John Jeavons and others, but he's the lead author. It bases a lot of the techniques on the French Intensive Method, which is placing plants so they grow up close and shade the soil and make the most of just a little garden space. This of course means u have to really build and fertilize your soil. Also, I had to modify some of his watering guidelines and use mulch, which I think he didn't feel was necessary, but it is in Texas unless u want to water constantly.
There are also plans for a mini-greenhouse that can be moved about easily so the growing season can be extended and for a digging tool that helps u cover about the width of a garden bed each time u wedge it into the earth.
Finally, don't try to do a whole lot of growing right from the start and be sure to grow some easy stuff like peppers and cucumbers so you will be more likely to do well and build your confidence. Just hang in and things will soon be blowing out of the ground!
