GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) - GM Seeds - Frankenfood -
« on: February 06, 2012, 09:34:52 PM »

Wondering if the vegetable seeds for sale in a store are GMO-free?
Botanical Interests and Seeds of Change both signed the "Safe Seed Pledge for 2012". See a list of other safe seed resources here: http://www.councilforresponsiblegenetics.org/ViewPage.aspx?pageId=261

Hi! I am starting my very first garden! And was wondering if anyone knows some places I can buy good Organic/Non-GMO seeds? Thanks!

Peggy McClinton
Bakers creek Heirloom seeds, Territorial Seeds.

Judy Conatser
Rhodes in Garland and Gecko at Ferndale and Northwest Highway in Dallas.

Misty Lynn Dean
I'm sorry I forgot to mention I am in Weatherford, so anywhere surrounding a lil closer to here

Linda McNamee
Russell Feed and Supply carries Botanical Interest seeds - heirloomm/non-gmo.

Tamara Woodcock
No such thing as GMO garden seeds. Don't pay extra for a "label" that is meaningless.

So your saying there is no such thing as GMO-free..?? I don't want Monsanto seeds! Lol

Rip van Winkle
No Monsanto doesn't sell any of their seeds to the public.

Michael Come
Only way to know in corn, soy or sugar beats is to buy from somebody that does genetic testing like Baker's Creek or Johnny's. Monsanto does own a seed supply house as well. You could be inadvertently supporting them by buying seeds.

Linda McNamee
It's true that the seeds sold to the public are non-gmo (not cost effective for the gmo company) but can still be sold by a gmo company. Botantical Interest and Baker Creek Seeds (among others) are NOT affiliated with gmo companies.

Misty Lynn Dean
So even if it says Organic, that's meaningless as well?

Michael Come
Misty Lynn Dean, correct.

Can somebody tell me where I CAN buy GMO garden seeds?..thats what I thought..They dont exist!.

Mallary Goldman
Actually, even Burpee Seeds are non-GMO. They also carry an organic line. Any TSC. I work for Burpee.

Charles Frank Deaton
Agree w/Bobby W.

Bobby W. Hollis
One more time. THEY DONT SELL GMO SEEDS TO HOME GARDENERS.

Linda McNamee Understood
Bobby W. Hollis, but some folks also don't want to put their money into gmo affiliated seed companies. It's a matter of personal choice for the individual.

Bobby W. Hollis
And I dont want my tax dollars going to the places they send it...but...lol

Currently commercialized GM crops in the U.S. include soy (94%), cotton (90%), canola (90%), sugar beets (95%), corn (88%), Hawaiian papaya (more than 50%), zucchini and yellow squash (over 24,000 acres). (Number in parentheses represents the estimated percent that is genetically modified.) Blue corn cross-pollinates with current GM corn varieties. And now, with the sugar beet growers going GM, there is the possibility of cross-pollination into other beet varieties and near relatives, such as chard. All but soy cross-pollinates.

Michael Come
I wish the usual suspects would quit saying that there is zero risk of ge seeds finding their way into farm supply stores or garden supply stores. It's been a problem since 2004 and is still one today. A SAFE seal seed provider has spent money to genetically test their at risk seed crops. It's outright ignorant to come into every non-gmo seed request thread and say it can't happen, when it has happened.

Charles Frank Deaton
Actually there are several companies playing the GMO game and the goal is probably profit, but feeding hungry mouths is certainly an effect.

Tamara Woodcock
The organic industry standard already excludes GMO's. If you are truly worried about GM vegetable seeds, buy organic.

Michael Come
Or she could just buy Safe seed labels for companies that don't want to pay the USDA organic certification fees. (Usually cheaper)

Again, to say that there is no chance of getting GE contaminated garden seed is wrong. There's been multiple incidents! Saying it over and over again doesn't make it true. There's been contaminated chard found in seed crops that had to be tossed by the grower because genetic testing revealed sb cross gene. Not really quite sure if we need A&M to release a public statement or what to convince some of these people. Heck, an extension agent sent me the above report!

Linda Smith Crawford
Then there are no safe seeds unless EVERYONE of them is tested....each seed has to be tested, with your theory, before you plant it. That would mean no one knows if they are planting GMO GE seeds and then no one can be organic... Big money in GE seeds, big money in Non GMO......

Michael Come
No, they just have to test the seed plants. Not all the seeds, and only open pollinated and 1st Gen closed pollination. It's not rocket science, just regular ole science. And you're right, our seed stocks were in great danger up until 2001 when they implemented testing at seed banks and people stopped listening to land grant universities & big chem then began independent testing.

Michael Come
That's what I said! But it would be great if you and the other few would quit spreading misinformation about there being no chance of buying ge seeds for your garden. If folks want to buy pure and specific seeds, that's their business.

Linda Smith Crawford
Its a information group, there are no GMO garden seeds....period

Obie Lansford
Believe it or not, while companies don't waste time selling their GMO seeds to homeowners, most seed suppliers that don't test for the presence of GM markers are selling seeds that have been cross pollinated with GM plants from large commercial farms that did buy their seeds from Monsanto. Those seeds contained engineered genes because that's how plant breeding works. This is why reputable companies like baker creek have to test the hell out of their parent plants. You can't keep bees from transferring GM pollen to your plants unless you are a long way from farmers using GMOs - which is why a lot of the stock of heirloom plants comes from oversees where they limit or outright ban GMO crops.

Michael Come Yeah, a few of them won't get it. It's okay, people like Mr. Morton of Wild Garden Seeds know. He lost several thousand dollars worth of chard seed stock from sugarbeet cross pollination.

Cliff Russell
I don't care if they are contaminated by GM or not. Like I have posted many times, and it makes some mad, I do not fear GMO crops. We all have eaten so much of it by now if we were going to grow extra eyes we would already have them. For me it is not a problem. I buy regular seeds and grow them very carefully or as most would say, Nearly organic but not quite After having lived in South America and working in Mexico for 17 yrs, If I am still in pretty good shape, I think my body will handle most any thing.

Michael Come
Cliff Russell, fortunately that's not the topic at hand or the information that the op requested.

Michael Come It's like me asking, "Hey where can I buy a new Chevy truck?", and a bunch of nagging folks saying "why do you want to buy a NEW Chevy, new Chevy trucks don't exist" and the when you get shown a photo of a new chevy, those same nags saying "why would you buy new, why not used"

Tamara Woodcock
No, it was someone asking where to buy a new Yurdo truck and a bunch of "nagging folks" saying "Yurdo trucks don't exist" and then a bunch of whiny folks saying "but what if a Yurdo truck touched a Chevy truck, then it would contaminate the Chevy!"

Misty Lynn Dean
He's not saying there can not be a debate about the subject, just that the question at hand (on this post)was simple and not asking everyone's opinion of the subject, just where to get a specific item. I prefer Organic/GMO free. I didn't ask to be criticized for my eating choices. I was not aware that "none" are GMO and a simple response to that would have sufficed. I know now not to ask questions from this group anymore.
