What do the numbers on bags of fertilizer mean?

The numbers on the fertilizer tell you the amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium per 100 pounds of fertilizer. IE 12-4-8 has 12 pounds of nitrogen in 100 pounds of fertilizer. If you get a 25 pound bag, you are getting 3 pounds of nitrogen.
