Eggshells Do Not Deter Slugs or Snails

Using eggshells in the garden is one of the most prominent #GardenMyths I see on social media. I ran across this picture, which sums it up nicely. The poster explains that she tried to use eggshells to keep slugs away. Her picture shows multiple snails climbing right over the eggshells with no problem. Some of the comments to this post were amusing: “you have to grind them up to work correctly”, “you have to bake them in your oven first” and on and on. The truth is eggshells don’t repel slugs or snails. (they attract them) Eggshells don’t fix blossom end rot. Eggshells don’t give your soil a calcium boost. One of my favorite websites has lots more information about using eggshells in the garden, and you can read more at https://www.gardenmyths.com/eggshells-not-use-garden/
