Back to Eden Film

A student in the Citizen Gardener class this weekend turned me on to this video that was released last summer. It is a documentary about gardening with nature (instead of against nature).  You can watch it all online, free of charge, or order the DVD for $15.

After years of back-breaking toil in ground ravaged by the effects of man-made growing systems, Paul Gautschi has discovered a taste of what God intended for mankind in the garden of Eden. Some of the vital issues facing agriculture today include soil preparation, fertilization, irrigation, weed control, pest control, crop rotation, and PH issues. None of these issues exist in the unaltered state of nature or in Paul’s gardens and orchards.

“Back to Eden” invites you to take a walk with Paul as he teaches you sustainable organic growing methods that are capable of being implemented in diverse climates around the world.

I give it a big two thumbs up.  Creating healthy soil, growing healthy food where you are, implementing permaculture principles, minimizing work and waste, encouraging biodiverisity…. these are all things I love hearing about.  You see it all unfold right before you.  He also ties in some Biblical references and talk of God, which I really appreciated, but don’t worry, if that is not your cup of tea, nothing is overbearing and it certainly doesn’t take away from all the great horticultural and biological messages.

Most of North Texas Now in Zone 8A

The USDA recently released an updated version of their ‘plant hardiness zone map‘ (or the PHZM if you like using government acronyms).  The new map is based on more recent data that spanned a longer time period.  In general, most areas moved up 1/2 of a zone, and almost all of the north Texas is now in ‘Zone 8a’, which means the average annual extreme minimum temperature has been between 10 and 15 degrees Fahrenheit.
