Texas Sized Raised Garden Bed for 2019

Hey my name is Jon and i’m going to start you guys off with a short summary of what I have going on right now for my new 24′ raised garden bed for 2019!

Raised Bed 2019 Google Spreadsheet

Listed above is all the seeds I have going on at the moment and also the ones I need to plant ASAP, which i’ll probably do sometime today.

BLACK GOLD by Sun Gro

My choice of soil (which wasn’t my choice actually) to start of the seeds was BLACKGOLD by Sun Gro. All natural and organic with a 0.05 – 0.00 – 0.00 nutrient rating.

For the pots, i’m using the double cup method for the first time. I put about 5 holes with a nail on the bottom of the cup that i’m going to put the soil in. Then place that cup with the holes and soil into a regular cup and boom! You’r done. I also wrote on the side of each cup which type of plant was in it. Another note, is to check the cups for water and dump it out every few days.

So I pretty much filled up each cup with soil all the way to the top then lightly patted down and filled it back up to the very top. For the depth I planted my seeds was based off the directions listed on the back of each package. I then added just enough water to moisten the top layer so not to drown the seeds. As you can see from the spreadsheet above, almost half of stuff sprouted within 7-10 days. Sadly, I haven’t seen any peppers yet but i’ll keep you guys updated on that. Oh and by the way these plants are on South facing window with no extra lighting. I just simply add a little water every other day, check for water in the bottom cups and boom! It’s that easy.

Since I need to plant more seeds now and I don’t have anymore room on my window. I went and bought two, GE 48″ T12 Plant fluorescent grow lights at Lowes. FYI if you are trying to save some money on the fluorescent tubing, go to Home Depot and get the Phillips brand for twice as less.

Now hopefully it’ll get warm enough today so I can finish cleaning up the garage, install the light bulbs, add new (longer) chain to the ballast/hood, and then set up the table in the garage for ALL my plants so my bedroom doesn’t look like a freaking jungle of daisy cups. So I guess this is it for now. I’ll get back to yall in a few days with the new vegging station in the garage and also a few pictures of the compost pile i have setup in the back for the NEW raised garden bed! :)

Hi Jon, what are the other dimension your 24’ raised bed?

    • Jon Alvey says:

Well I’ll explain my new idea in my next blog but it involves doing an in ground garden instead of the much planned raised bed. But the dimensions were 24’x6’x10″.

Good for you Jon! You are way ahead of me. I have leeks and onions to plant, but the weather is not cooperating. Ordered fresh seed today. A bunch of stuff. I wintersow, so I don’t use lights. All my milk jugs are ready to go as soon as my seed arrives.

Yeah thank you :) noticed some plants have gotten super stretched out in the window so I might be redoing a few but it’s not a total loss. Luckily the new light is working great. Hope everything works out great for you this year too!
